A garden holiday with a difference – Meet the gardeners in South Devon

Written by Julia on 29th December 2009

Join us in April at TLH Leisure Resort for the first of our new garden holidays. Enjoy a colourful and rejuvenating jaunt through some of Devon’s most beautiful spring gardens, escorted by Judy Disney of Great Garden Getaways. From woodland glades, to subtropical plants and flowers, we will explore a diversity of gardens that thrive in Devon’s mild climate. Several of our visits will include personal tours conducted by the owners or Head Gardeners, to help us learn more about their wonderful gardens and the varying conditions in which they work.

Well known for its rich variety of trees, shrubs and ornamental gardens, RHS Rosemoor is top of our list for a spring visit, with its woodland trails amassed with the dazzling colours of rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas. These acid loving plants can also be found in the colourful Lukeslands gardens, which nestle in a secluded valley on the slopes of Dartmoor.

Renowned for half-hardy plants and it’s woodland garden, we will also visit Coleton Fishacre, the seaside home of Rupert D’Oyly Carte of Gilbert & Sullivan fame, which sits in a stream-fed valley above the scenic Devon coast and is now owned by the National Trust

One visit that could not be missed as part of our spring collection is the truly inspirational Garden House at Buckland Monachorum. Steeped in history and set in a tranquil valley, the walled garden surrounds the ruins of Buckland’s medieval vicarage. Beyond stretches a modern garden planted in a naturalistic style and the whole site contains over 6,000 plants!

Guests will stay at the 3 star Carlton Hotel, part of the TLH Leisure Resort in Torquay in the heart of the English Riviera, which is nationally renowned for its amazing Aztec Falls leisure complex and nightly entertainment. With prices starting at only £240 pp for 4 nights dinner bed and breakfast this is an opportunity not to be missed by keen gardeners and plantsmen alike.
