Cream Teas, Cakes and Bowling – all in the heart of the English Riviera
Written by Terri on 8th June 2010Where is TLH Leisure Resort
TLH Leisure Resort is a family owned group of 4 hotels on a 7 acre site, and is set in the heart of the English Riviera. Just a few minutes walk from the landscaped promenades and beaches, and with its close proximity to the town and other places of interest, TLH is an ideal place to use as a base for exploration.
The English Riviera
The English Riviera is of course, Torbay in blissful Devon. It stretches from Torquay right round the bay to Brixham, taking in Paignton and is probably one of the best playgrounds for adults and children alike.
Recognised as a ‘geopark’ the English Riviera is home to some of the most spectacular coastline in the south west of England. Rare and exotic wildlife thrives in over 100 parks and gardens and its unique heritage spans millions of years.
Walk the promenades, or take the ferry from Torquay to Brixham. Go to the shops and browse or visit the Museum and learn about our nautical history. It really is a place for everyone and that includes Bowlers.
Bowling on the English Riviera
There are 11 bowling Clubs on the Riviera, some of which have fantastic views of moorland and sea as well as grand Country houses. But it’s not always about the bowling, it’s about the company of club mates and fellow tourists and all the other things that our local clubs offer:
I’m often asked, ‘Where do you get the best cream tea?’ ‘Who makes the best cakes and what entertainments are offered for the tourist in this part of the world’.
Cream Teas and other delights
No matter which bowls club you visit in the area you will find a handsome welcome. The Devon Cream Tea served at some of the clubs for visiting teams is a true delight, but if you don’t get a proper cream tea, what I can assure you of, is a selection of homemade cakes. I can tell you that Brixham’s sponges and pavlovas are to die for and King’s lemon drizzle cake is more than a mouth-watering delight. Of course it’s all homemade, and because you’ve not had to do it yourselves, it tastes all the better.
So, when you’ve buttered your scone, it doesn’t matter whether you put the cream on before the jam, just spread it all on, good and rich and thick, and to hell with the calories. Help yourself to the strawberry gateaux and work it all off in the second half of the game. You’re on your hols, so go on, live a little.
Evening Entertainment
TLH has its own entertainments programme. Lead by own team of singers and entertainers they have something on the go all day long. Just look at the programme on reception everyday for their itinerary.
Bingo is a great hit in the evening with most people and then we have the cabarets. But this article is not all about TLH – it’s about what the local clubs can offer you
Torquay Belgrave Bowls Club really pushes the boat out for visitors. One of our very local clubs, Belgrave invites our tourists back, after evening meal, to take part in a social evening at their club. They are famous for their Pig Racing nights! This is a hilarious night out. Each pig appears in a programme with a full pedigree and history so that you can place your bets accordingly. Watching them wiggle down the course is the funny bit, but you’d be surprised, that even this silly, and chance occupation, brings out the competitive edge in you. There is also a nice little bar with a very friendly atmosphere. Visitors are always welcome there and it’s only a few yards from TLH. So what are you all waiting for?
