TLH Leisure Resort has been a member of the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) since 2004. As we live in such a beautiful part of the country our environment is especially important to us and to the sustainability of tourism in the South West. Therefore we do whatever we can to support a greener life-style.
This commitment runs throughout the business as we engage all of our staff in what we are trying to achieve. Many of our green initiatives have come about as a result of their own ideas and suggestions.
In recognition of our efforts the Toorak is holder of a gold GTBS awards, and the Derwent, Victoria and Carlton Hotels are silver award winners.
Nigel Beck, our general manager at the Toorak heads our green initiatives here at TLH and has been appointed a "green champion" for Devon, which means we can give advice to any new business wanting to join the scheme.
We have adopted a number of measures to support recycling and reduce waste, including recycling rubbish from guest bedrooms, office waste paper, newspapers and bottles.
Wherever possible we hold paperless meetings and encourage our customers to do likewise.
Our marketing department has reduced the quantity of print we produce and wherever possible sends brochures electronically, via email or through downloads from our website.
We carry out a detailed analysis of usage on all utilities used and made capital investment in new energy efficient boilers which use a computerised system to control "environment". We use low energy light bulbs, movement sensor lights in wash rooms, and reviewed controls of air-conditioning and plant.
We introduced water butts, bird boxes and developed a wildlife garden area. We grow fresh herbs for our kitchens, compost vegetable peelings from the kitchen and recycle waste cooking oil.
Environmentally Friendly Products
Our housekeeping departments use non chemical cleaning products and cloths and we have reduced the use of sachets and bottles of shower gel and soap in guest bathrooms by replacing these with dispensers.
Wherever possible our Chefs order from local producers to reduce food miles and support the local economy. The South West has a rich store of local fruit and vegetables, meat and fish.
We encourage sustainable transport, promoting the use of buses, ferries and cycling. We also provide cycle racks for guests and staff to use.
