- The three resorts of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham have collectively been known as the English Riviera since Victorian times.

- Fort Bovisand near Plymouth is a former coastal defence against the threat of invasion from Napolean. Today it is an internationally acclaimed diver training centre.
- Sharpham Vineyard near Totnes produced award winning vintage wines each year and also wins prizes for its Brie cheese.
