8 Benefits of Exercising with a Friend

If you could only do two things to improve your health, experts suggest exercising and spending quality time with friends would be the best place to start. We all know exercise is important but keeping in touch with friends may be even more important than you’d think. Loneliness is as harmful to your well-being as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, according to several recent studies.

So, why not kill two birds with one stone and combine the two? Bring a friend along to your next workout and you’ll both reap the benefits. Here’s why:

1. You’ll enjoy your workout more

In a study of 117 adults, those who worked out with friends, partners or colleagues, said they enjoyed the exercise more than those who did it alone.

2. You’ll be less likely to get injured

Ask your workout buddy to let you know when your technique suffers, and you can do the same for them. Poor form when fatigued is one of the key reasons we get injured in the gym.

3. You’ll feel less stressed

Exercise is a great stress buster but if you have a workout buddy, you are even more likely to feel calmer after your exercise session. You don’t have to chat to each other to gain these benefits – just working out alongside each other is enough.

4. You’ll push yourself harder

If you’re worried your exercise partner being fitter than you, that’s a good thing! Most of us are naturally competitive so when you’re with a fit friend, you find it easier to really push yourself to keep up.

5. You’ll be more likely to make it a habit

We all know how easy it is to talk ourselves out of a workout, but if you have someone else relying on you to turn up you’re more likely to get our trainers on and get out the door.

6. You’ll meet your goals faster

Because you’re more likely to be consistent and push yourself harder, your performance will improve faster than when you’re only attending the gym sporadically and not making the most of it when you do get there.

7. You’ll break out of your rut

It’s easy to fall into the same old routine of exercises, which is fine for a while but your body needs to be challenged to see improvements. A friend might have suggestions for switching up your routine that you wouldn’t think of alone, and that will keep things interesting and challenging for your muscles and your mind.
