With the success of last year’s 12 hour cycle for Sport Relief, we wanted to host a brand new event to gather our staff together once again and of course, what brings people together better than cake? So, after much discussion, we decided on a Great TLH Bake Off.
We invited all our TLH staff to put on their pinnies and get baking and present their masterpieces to be judged by our TLH chefs. Everyone from receptionists, gym instructors and housekeeping staff joined it and almost every department had an entry.
Head Chefs choose their favourites
Our Chefs spend so much time preparing and cooking delicious meals everyday all year round for our TLH guests, who better to judge our Bake Off. Our head judge was Nick Coombes who is Head Chef at the TLH Toorak. Nick has worked for TLH for 30 years and certainly knows a thing or two about cooking. We also had Dave Clifford, Head Chef of the TLH Victoria, who has also worked for TLH for 30 years and knows his way around the kitchen. Our third judge was Lee Johnston, Head Chef the TLH Carlton. Lee is another long-serving staff member and has worked for TLH for 25 years. The categories being judged were Best Taste, Best Decorated and Most Creative, each with a winner and runner up award.
Overwhelming staff effort
On Red Nose day the cakes came flooding in from 8am right up until 12:30pm when the judging started. We had a range of cakes such as the classic Victoria sponge, chocolate lovers Rocky Road slice, beautiful decorated Pink Velvet, vegan and Gluten free specialties and cakes that truly looked amazing which looked like you could have bought from a bakery. We had a complete mix of departments enter such as, Albert’s, Maintenance, Sales, Payroll, Aztec, Reservations, Housekeeping and Restaurant staff. We were overwhelmed by the effort our staff had made for this great cause.
Judges make tough choices
The cake judging started at 12:30pm on Red Nose Day in the Aztec Bistro with the cakes then going on sale after between 1pm – 3pm. Our staff eagerly waited to see if they had been chosen as winners or runners up. We went LIVE on Facebook which you can watch on our TLH Facebook page to see how beautiful the cakes really were. It was a tough choice for our judges to make especially as they had so many to try! After a bite of each cake our judges deliberated and then announce the awards:
Cakes sold for Comic Relief
Our cakes then went on sale from 1pm where staff, members and guests all came to buy a slice of cake and donate towards a great cause. In total we raised £136.50 and would like to thank all of our TLH staff for their tremendous efforts and of course everyone who donated and bought a slice of cake.
