The lower back is actually a maze of many muscles working together and connecting in different places, so it is difficult to name just one main muscle to be worked as when strengthening and stretching your lower back you will be using a collection of the following muscles:

Muscle of the Month – Gluteus Maximus
What and where is it?
Commonly known as your glutes, the gluteus maximus is the outermost buttock muscle. It is regarded as one of the strongest muscles in the human body. It is connected to the coccyx, or tailbone, as well as other surrounding bones and is responsible for movement of the hip and thigh.
