Lights, Camera, Torquay! – The English Riviera on Screen

20 October 2025

Torquay, with its golden beaches, dramatic coastline and charming Victorian architecture, has long been more than just a seaside escape — it’s a star in its own right! The picturesque English Riviera has provided the backdrop for several iconic productions, from blockbuster hits to beloved British television classics. Whether you’re a film buff or simply enjoy spotting familiar places on screen, Torquay’s cinematic history adds an extra touch of magic to any visit.

Harry Potter

Lustleigh in Devon has been stepping into the spotlight as one of the filming locations for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV adaptation, code-named “Brown Cat.” The quaint, thatched-roofed village—with its winding lanes, stone walls, and ancient charm—has been dressed as a likely stand-in for Godric’s Hollow, a setting rich in the story’s magical history. The production has already made some unexpected improvements to local infrastructure—Wreyland Path, a picturesque footpath bordered by hedgerows and cottages, has had potholes filled and repaired in preparation for filming. The filming is generating buzz, and local businesses are hoping for a boost in visitors once the show airs in 2027.

The Salt Path

Parts of the film version of The Salt Path were shot along Devon’s dramatic coastline, showcasing places such as Clovelly and Hartland Quay. These wild, rugged landscapes mirror the story’s themes of loss, resilience and rediscovery, as the protagonists walk the South West Coast Path in the face of adversity.

Blackball – Comedy and Bowls on the Riviera

Torquay’s love of lawn bowls found its way to the big screen with Blackball (2003), a cheeky British comedy starring Paul Kaye, James Cromwell and Vince Vaughn. Filmed in and around Torquay, Blackball tells the story of a rebellious young bowls player trying to shake up the traditional world of the sport. With scenes set against the beautiful backdrop of the English Riviera, locals still recall the excitement of film crews taking over greens and promenades for this cult comedy.

Bergerac on the Riviera

The new series of Bergerac (a reimagined version of the 1980s detective show) is being filmed in multiple locations, including Torquay, during the summer through to October 2025. While Bergerac was famously set in Jersey, certain scenes from the long-running detective drama were shot in Torquay and across the South Devon coast. The town’s distinctive harbour, palm-lined seafront and elegant hotels made it an ideal double for the Channel Islands. Torquay’s timeless atmosphere helped bring the glamour and intrigue of the 1980s detective show to life.

That Summer! – Ray Winstone’s Big Screen Debut on the English Riviera

In the 1970s, Torquay played a starring role in the cult British comedy film That Summer! (1979), which marked Ray Winstone’s first major film appearance. The movie follows two London teenagers who head to Torquay for the summer in search of sun, sea, and new adventures, capturing both the energy of youth and the charm of the English Riviera. Many of the film’s scenes were shot on Torquay’s beaches, harbour, and promenade, offering a nostalgic glimpse of the seaside town during its heyday as a classic British holiday destination. The film not only launched Winstone’s acting career but also immortalised Torquay’s laid-back coastal atmosphere on screen, reminding viewers why the town continues to be a favourite for both filmmakers and holidaymakers.

Other Notable Mentions

Torquay’s natural beauty and period charm have continued to attract filmmakers and production companies. Documentaries, holiday features, and TV dramas often showcase the town’s scenic marina, cliff-top walks, and Art Deco architecture. The area’s connection to Fawlty Towers — though the show was never filmed here — remains a fun cultural touchstone for visitors who can still see echoes of Basil Fawlty’s comedic chaos in some of Torquay’s grand hotels.

A Star of the South Coast

With its blend of elegance, history, and cinematic appeal, Torquay remains a natural choice for the screen. The town’s ever-changing light, sweeping sea views, and versatile locations continue to inspire filmmakers, photographers, and storytellers alike. Whether it’s a magical cliffside moment, a laugh-out-loud British comedy, or a gripping detective mystery, Torquay provides the perfect stage.

So next time you’re wandering along the seafront or soaking up the sea air, remember — you’re walking in the footsteps of movie magic!
